Present Tenses (3): Simple Present and its uses

1. General Time
- Usually, we use simple present tense when talking about permanent situations or about the things that happen regularly, repeatedly, or all the time.
Examples:
I go to the gym every weekends.
Hannah works for a financial company.
What do chickens eat? ( not- what are chickens eating?)
2. Not used for things that happened just around the present
Examples
It usually snows in December.
Look-its snowing! (not-look-it snows!)
Sheina plays badminton every Satuday.
Where’s Sheina?—She’s playing badminton.
3. Non-progressive verbs
The simple present is used for this “around the present” meaning with verbs that do not have progressive forms.
Examples
I like Japanese wine (sake) very much.( not liking..)
I believe her. ( not I’m believing her.)
4. Talking about the future
Usually, we do not use the simple present tense to talk about the future. But, the simple present is used for “timetabled” future events. Moreover, the simple present is often used instead of “will”..in subordinate clauses that refer to the future. Also, the simple present is also used in suggestions with..Why don’t you..?
Examples
We are going to the cinema tonight. ( not- We go to the cinema tonight.)
I start my new job on December 1.
I’ll phone you when I get to the conference hall.
Why don’t you take a day off this Friday?
5. Series of events: demonstrations, commentaries, instructions, stories.
Examples
John passes to Henry, Henry shoots!
First, get the frying pan and put oil…..add spices…
So, I’ll go the manager’s table and I see a blue folder…and brings it to you.
6. How long? Present tenses not used
We should use the perfect tense, not a present tense, to say how long a present action or situation has been going on.
Examples
I’ve been her in this company since 2000.
I’ve known him since 1990.
